Vapid Witching Hour + Dance Legend Top Magnetic Green

A swatch photo in the Vapid fan group reminded me that Witching Hour is awfully pretty in a deep, dark, vampy way... and a cool effects topcoat from Dance Legend was just languishing untried, so...

Yes!  Slytherin nails!

First layers first:

Witching Hour is a deep inky off-black base with very fine-milled purple shimmer.  The bottle catches more shimmer for me than my nails do, and this is indeed one of those polishes that looks black in moderate light on down, but that was wholly expected from the get go.  It's completely opaque in 2 coats, but cleanup can be dicey if this ink gets at your cuticle egde.

The morning after I'd painted this, I wanted my vampy look to have more flash than just a creature of the night, and since the base layer was totally dry, it seemed a great time to try out one of Dance Legend's magnetic top coats.

DL released a half a handful of "top magnetic" polishes in various colors, each with a sheer base and designed to be worn over something else.  The green one instantly caught my eye and has been on my wishlist for a while, and didn't languish too long once it arrived.

This is one coat of Top Magnetic Green over two coats of Witching Hour, and the lines right after magnetization were super cool and wicked sharp.  They softened out a whole lot after 24h, sadly, but the effect is still plenty dramatic and very sparkly cat's eye IRL.

The color in the bottle is a yellowish mossy green, but the magnetic particles are a much more true emerald.  I didn't feel the base tinted my undie color much at all (with the fresh and sharp magnetic lines, there wasn't really a discernible change in Witching Hour's color), and it was easy to work with.  To make the whole green-on-dark just that touch more witchy, I've added some silver stars from KD 27, and would 100% wear this look to a Harry Potter themed party.

Rating:  3 stars for both polishes, which I think started off solid but then overall added up to more than the sum of their parts.  Witching Hour is a little too plain for me to wear on its own (a different story if the shimmer was as flashy on the nail as it is in the bottle), but is a really nice base for nail art if you don't want to go stark black.  If Top Magnetic Green had stayed put or only softened a bit it'd be an epic winner, but if this degree of post-drying spread is typical it's really going to need to be done over high contrast colors only to show to good effect.  The whole mani wore nicely and didn't show obvious chipping or edgewear after several days, which can be a real problem with super vampy shades.

Where to buy:  Vapid has reduced her online store presence, so try there or haunt destashes to find this older shade.  Dance Legend used to be stocked by loads of US stores, but lately nobody is really picking up their new stuff, which I find to be a great shame.  I caved and imported this from Hypnotic Polish when they had a sale early this year.
