Glitter Gal Red Night Sky

I just spent an amazingly blissful long weekend in Asheville, NC, where we took in a Chihuly exhibit at the Biltmore estate.  Given that this was all about art glass, I went with a glass fleck polish for the weekend.

Red Night Sky was one of a quad released by Glitter Gal as Brilliant Shade Shifters - each of these was a duochromatic glass fleck that's fine to use as either a topper or solo.  Since I prefer to have these type of jellies build up to the base color, I usually like them solo at a few coats better, and it took me 3 coats to get to the opacity you see here.

The first coat goes on extremely sheer, but instantly packed with all the sparkly glass flecky goodness you see here.  Red Night Sky (really, all of these are very aptly named) is a warm but desaturated red, somewhere between brick and coral, brought to life with sparks that shift from a cool blue on over to a very hot pink.

The formula was super smooth and went on easily despite this being a sorta mini-size bottle (most of my other Glitter Gal polishes are full-size 15ml bottles, while this one was 10ml).  There's absolutely enough glass fleck sparkle to be used in one coat over a darker color, but each layer builds up more of the sheer jelly base and glass flecks to result in a hammered metal finish when worn solo, though I was able to see through the shimmer to the base below in some lighting conditions.

Every color you see sparking in the bottle above was at some point what my nails looked like. This is indeed pretty and shifty!

Rating:  3 out of 5 stars.  Ultimately, I think I wanted something closer to the warm brick red of the base color as seen in the bottle, instead of the more subtle pinky-red that I got because of how sheer a polish this is - up to you if you consider that a flaw, since many people chose to wear these over black when they came out.  I do feel the base color + glass fleck is a lot more unique than the look of simply the sparkles over black, but next time I think I'll try it out over a coordinating base color to get the color deeper and more saturated.  My long weekend ended up being pretty lazy, and a polish change just wasn't on my priority list.  These 3 coats of Red Night Sky carried me right on past the weekend and on into the first couple of days of this week, with only mild, even edgewear and no chips, but some crazy grow-out.  Just enjoy the color and not my major cuticle gap, ok?

Where to buy:  honestly, I don't know anymore, for those of us in the US. Glitter Gal was super hot back in the day (ok, all of 6 years ago), but at this point I can find only one stockist, and prices to ship out of Australia are exorbitant. Haunt those destashes, ladies!
