I really love brown nail polish - such a richer, deeper neutral than nude or baby pink - but I almost never reach for it while being drawn to bright greens and purples (letting my colorblind partner pick the color doubly means that neutrals are left forgotten).

Burnished Ossein was an "oops" batch of Femme Fatale's that I've still never quite figured out the intended color for... probably one of the Enchanted Fables, since many of those were also gorgeous contrast shimmers. Oops or not, this polish is very much in her "house style" and is a beautiful neutral.

What we have here is a creamy milk-cocoa brown, with decidedly plummy red undertones - the edges of both bottle shots above show what the base color looks like without the impact of the shimmer overlay. The gorgeous shimmer was always present on the nail, though, adding a cool gold wash in low light and a bright metallic sparkle in full sunlight.

The formula on this was thicker than I'd normally like, but in that good way that stays right where you put it and then requires minimal cleanup. The polish behaved a lot like a matte, drying unusually quickly so that it was necessary to load up the brush and paint fast with as few strokes as possible to get the whole nail done without dragging back over previously painted spots. Burnished Ossein was fully opaque in 2 coats.

The giraffe skin stamping is from Uber Chic's Out of Africa plate, with an accent nail giraffe from Major Dijit 38, all done in Esmaltes da Kelly Princess Leia. If you're a stamping enthusiast, you really should check out EdK's Star Wars collection, most of which are gorgeously shimmery polishes that show up as their base color on light backgrounds and as the shimmer on darker ones. Leia is a soft baby pink packed with tawny gold shimmer, and the ruddy brown background of Burnished Ossein swallows up the pink to leave only the metallic warm gold visible.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars, a gorgeous neutral and utterly wearable brown.
Where to buy: as with most makers that occasionally release "oops" type batches, these are one pour then gone, since that's not how the formula is supposed to go. Keep an eye out for destashes & blog sales.
