A couple of months ago, a polish sorceress/horrible enabler in one of my fb groups tipped me off to the magic that is Indigo Bananas' custom for a now defunct group called This Shift is Bananas. Do I need yet another Clarins 230-infused purple polish? Obviously, hell yes.

Yeeeaaaahhhhh, there's going to be a lot of pics of this business right here.

When you ask nail aficionados what the ideal base is for "unicorn pee" shimmers, the clear top winners are royal purple, saturated cobalt blue, or straight up black - cool, dark bases really allow all of the prominent colors of this pigment's shift, from red to bronze to green, to really pop. This Shift is Bananas manages to hit a sweet spot in between all 3 with a dark, smoky eggplant purple. It's truly unique in my stash, and is a deliciously vampy but very wearable color.

In bright indoor lighting and of course in sunlight, that 230 sparkle is nicely prominent - the amount of shimmer in the bottle is what you get on the nail. In lower light, you instead get a subtle duochromatic haze, turning it into a pretty and non-traditional/edgy neutral.

Our favorite shifty sparkle is nicely on display here, going from bronze to green without needing tricky light to look great.

Now, of course to get the shimmer to be so prominent, this polish is a bit sheer, possibly enough so to be a topper over other blues and purples. This polish is quite buildable, however, deepening significantly with each additional coat. At 2 coats, the color was a lighter, more amethyst purple that was quite pretty, but 3 coats was necessary for even coverage. The 3rd coat brought out the vampy, smoky tint promised in the bottle.

3 coats is of course no big deal when you end up with rainbows like this.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars. This color is a hell yes, and the formula was nice. Indigo Bananas' brush and consistency are winners for me. The overall thickness of 3 coats meant that I had edgewear and a couple of chips on several nails by the 3rd day of wear, and of course dark colors show any wear much more prominently. The color was well worth a touch-up to keep it on a little longer.
Where to buy: this pretty is
currently sold out on Indigo Bananas store, but it may return in the future.
