China Glaze Strap on Your Moonboots

Just a couple of years ago (2013, in fact), China Glaze released their Hologlam collection of linear holos with space-themed names.  I snapped up a couple on deep discount from a destash recently, and tried out the first of my pair with an accent dotticure.  This one is Strap on Your Moonboots.

Moonboots is an almost dusty denim blue with a thicker, creamy formula that's fully opaque in 2 coats.  I've paired it up here with an accent nail of Color Club's Williamsburg on the middle finger and some dots of both colors + Dreams Pisces (a silvery blue glitter) on ring and middle fingers.  Of course my dots didn't spread evenly with the 3 different formulae, but pffffft, ignore that.

The color is rich and rather pretty... but damn have we come a long way with our holos.  This stuff dries fast enough that you get one pass with the brush before you're done or else risk lifting up the polish and creating bald spots.  WHAAAA?  Yeah, you're gonna need some aqua base here, which holos haven't required in quite some time.

When you get some holo rainbows, the effect is ultra smooth and fine, as though the polish is satin.

Wait, WHEN you get holo?  Yes indeed, even in direct sunlight, the above and below pics are about as rainbow-errific as it's gonna get.  There's a subtle sheen of colors, but this is nowhere near in-your-face, and I hesitate to even classify it as "linear" with the lack of a strong flame.

The formula being less than participatory means that the 2nd coat had to be a bit thicker than my usual to even out the drags on the first coat, so it ended up chipping pretty quick to boot.  Sadface.

Rating:  2 out of 5 stars.  Though the rich denim is a somewhat unique color in my stash, the persnickety formula and disappointing holo gets less love from me.

Where to buy:  though this isn't part of CG's core collection, it's still pretty easy to come by on ebay/etc or in destashes.  Or from me, since I'm putting this in the trade pile.
